This is our third meeting now with the new Zoom system where people can contemporaneously participate in both English and Spanish. Just so all participants are aware, at the direction of the board, this meeting is being recorded and will be shared with the public. We generally try to post our meeting videos on YouTube about a day or 2 after. Tonight's a relatively modest meeting where we have 2 main things happening. The first is the public hearing on KIPP Excelencia's charter renewal petition. There won't be any vote tonight. That doesn't come until December. We'll also be receiving an update from the Health and Wellness Department. The board encourages all members of the public to participate and to provide comment on issues of concern, regardless of whether or not they're on the agenda. If you're here in person, please fill out a speaker card. You don't have to give your legal name, but if you'd like for us to follow up with you, please consider adding contact information. If you're online with Zoom, you can just raise your hand and we will call on you based on your Zoom name. If you're speaking on a topic on the agenda, you'll be called at that time that that item is being considered. If it's not on the agenda, we will call on you in the public comment portion near the beginning of our meeting. To be fair to all speakers, comment is limited to 3 minutes unless otherwise noted. You'll see a countdown clock at the front of the podium. As a reminder, anytime a public comment is on an item not on the agenda, the board will be unable to take action or comment on the matter. If you're here to speak on the KIPP Excelencia charter renewal, we'll take your comment during the public hearing at item 8.1. And now for our Pledge of Allegiance."},{"start":162093,"end":168003,"speaker":"E","text":"Excellent."},{"start":182557,"end":183105,"speaker":"I","text":"Good afternoon."},{"start":183605,"end":186209,"speaker":"G","text":"My name is Enrique Pina. Uh, second, as you know, we had our negotiations and we were able to finish than with 2 meetings. We sent our— we sent out our TAs to our members for review, and we will have our voting next week. I couldn't have done this without our wonderful team and member input. I'm in 6th grade and I go to Kennedy Middle School. Um, on the committee, we meet as a group and answer questions, um, made by the community, the community, and, and then we have the— and we like go around the school. Thank you. Ask other students, like interview them and ask them their opinion about the questions, and then we meet up and talk about the questions and how we can fix it. I feel like what I say matters. Last year at school, bullying was a huge problem, and I've— and through many schools. There was a website made so that you could explain your bullying anonymously so that it gets dealt with, and I feel like that was used very well. I, I noticed that some students at my school had issues or problems that they would talk about but didn't feel like they had the power to fix because they are just kids, students. And, uh, when I— so when I was offered the chance To be on this board and get to talk and contribute about, um, issues that I have heard, then I thought it was a good opportunity. And yeah. As an advisor on the committee, um, every few months Ms. Redd will come to my school and give me a couple questions about my community and school. And I'll answer them. They're usually about things like, do you— like, how many people feel safe? Have they— have they have safe spaces at school? And yeah. I think that what I say matters. I think that what everyone says matters, and everybody should have the opportunity or the chance to have their say in things like educate— their education, other people's education, and, um, and, and like the world in general."},{"start":636958,"end":648032,"speaker":"J","text":"All right, so thank you both. We send out information for this on an annual basis, whether it's the end of the year or the beginning, from the nurses program, but also the first day of school packets that go out from registration also has all this information. So that's where that gets done on an annual basis. Next slide."},{"start":698215,"end":700063,"speaker":"A","text":"Okay, that's not—"},{"start":700063,"end":700529,"speaker":"G","text":"yeah."},{"start":700529,"end":738974,"speaker":"C","text":"Hi, so this slide is about the BP/AR 5141.4, um, mandated, uh, reporter training, and all district employees are mandated reporters. Employees who start after that date get the training through their onboarding. And also, the district We'll do live training upon request."},{"start":738974,"end":789685,"speaker":"J","text":"All right, so as you guys are aware, in our school district this year we've had a number of students that have been, um, hospitalized. So far we've had 5 this year, which is our total amount for last year's school year. So we've seen an uptick, and we are trying to expand 988 awareness so students know protocols on how to get in contact if they have any concerns regarding suicide or any type of domestic violence within our ID cards for 7th and 8th grade. If the school issues those out, they have to put these required numbers on the back of those ID cards. And so that's something newly that's implemented this school year."},{"start":789943,"end":790248,"speaker":"M","text":"Next."},{"start":790248,"end":813687,"speaker":"J","text":"Some of the other actions, as Phoebe mentioned, is our Vector Solution training. We're getting parents involved. We have our SEL skill building. We are working and following the county protocols as well as creating site teams for Kennedy and MIT and taking them to a training on October 23rd with the County Office of Ed."},{"start":813687,"end":833937,"speaker":"C","text":"All right, and this is our nursing team. We have 4 RNs and 7 LVNs. 2 of our LVNs assist the RNs in the office. 5 of the LVNs are one-to-one for students with medically complex conditions that requires assessment throughout the day."},{"start":833937,"end":877428,"speaker":"O","text":"Okay, this next one is the data for Sunrisis, which is the dental program from Dr. Bonnie that comes in and does pre-K through 1st. Um, next slide. Well, this just shows the, uh, schools that we've done, whether it's, uh, the school itself with TK through 1st or the CDC. Next slide. We screened, uh, 462. 443 were what they actually were able to complete the data, and of that, 13% were treatment urgency to where they needed to see a dentist immediately. And Dr. Bonnie's really good about either trying to find a dentist for those kiddos, or she does it herself."},{"start":877428,"end":925236,"speaker":"C","text":"Thanks. All right, last school year we started a partnership with Dr. Sorrell, um, and he comes to our school site and brings preventive dental care. He sees the students in 2 visits. First visit includes a dental exam where he'll also at that time apply fluoride and silver diamine fluoride, which that stops decay from progressing. The second visit is dental cleaning, and at that time he also applies a dental sealant on the flat surface of the chewing teeth in the back, and that also prevents cavities. Thank you."},{"start":925236,"end":954260,"speaker":"J","text":"So just moving forward, we want to just continue to communicate between the provider and the parents, the schools and the parents, and also between service providers Because one is doing screening, the other is doing treatment. So we need them to talk to each other. So as we progress, that's one of the things that we would like to see because we want to continue with the early detection. And we're working with some of our newer local clinics to refer parents out for treatment. Next slide."},{"start":954260,"end":1008491,"speaker":"O","text":"So this is just our hearing screening results from 2025. Next slide. This is our vision screening results from 2025. Next slide. Of that, what we wanted to show was the failures that we had. We implemented last year a follow-up program where we actually called the parents of these failures, and what this data shows was whether or not the parents answered the phone. If they did, whether or not they received the referrals we sent home. If they did, whether they were able to go and get their kids either glasses or seen by, uh, for hearing. And then is there anything additional they needed? So a A lot of the information that we gathered from this was they were able to or they weren't. There is a language barrier, or the kids just don't wear their glasses. They're broken and they're unable to afford to get new ones, especially parents that, um, don't have insurance."},{"start":1008993,"end":1009431,"speaker":"R","text":"Next slide."},{"start":1011957,"end":1012220,"speaker":"N","text":"Is that me?"},{"start":1012220,"end":1085460,"speaker":"J","text":"I added this slide. And so just so you guys know that we are creating a partnership with Vision to Learn. They've already been in the district. Menlo Park Lions Club have provided glasses for us, um, free to our students. Lucero Foundation has provided grant funding to us, and now we're also working with our community schools to allocate funding for our McKinley-Vento students to support these efforts. So I just want to highlight our student CPR certification. Last year, our board president, Weekly, had funded for 50 students to participate in CPR classes, and so we had 48 Students out of the 50 complete the classes. We had a large number of students that signed up, and so we still have a couple of vouchers to use where students can go. But parents were really on fire about this idea, and I know some of the school sites are talking to their administration to see how they can keep this going. And the students felt that it was really valuable for them to experience this opportunity, so they were very thankful to you."},{"start":1085460,"end":1085669,"speaker":"E","text":"Thank you."},{"start":1086071,"end":1141483,"speaker":"J","text":"President Weekly. And then the— I added this that you guys didn't get to see. There's pictures of when they actually did the CPR certification and the students in action. Next slide. Safe Routes to School conducted a bike survey last year in May. They will be coming back to do another survey. We did find that there are a number of our students riding e-scooters, which are illegal for students that are, um, under 16. And then also, it's not very safe for them to be riding the e-motos because they can reach up to 65 miles per hour. And so, um, the San Mateo County Office of Ed, they are doing, um, a, a workshop next week on Monday, and so they can give information out on the different forms of e-scooters. So look out for more information."},{"start":1141483,"end":1141755,"speaker":"A","text":"Thank you."},{"start":1142271,"end":1142770,"speaker":"C","text":"about that."},{"start":1142770,"end":1285012,"speaker":"J","text":"We have a BCBA that— and behavior technicians that are funded through the LCAP. We experience a number of students coming into schools that have been identified as having behavior concerns, or sometimes we find that faculty has challenge with management of the classroom. And so it's been pretty consistent over the years, but we just continue to support these efforts through LCAP to help minimize the referrals to special education due to behaviors, as well as to help ease the students into school, because most of this is occurring from our K-2 grade levels. I just want to note that many of our funding components come through the Sequoia Healthcare District, over $1.4 million. They are changing to a different funding formula possibly for next year in a different type of grant funding. And so more information is to come that will be going directly to our superintendent, but they are funding many of our partners. Although it shows that there is a decline in what they funded the district directly, they still have other grant programs that fund programs within the Redwood City School District. And one of these are our parent education series. So they have 4 classes that are scheduled district-wide, and we also have 4 classes Scheduled in Spanish that are facilitated by Michelle Ribon. And then they continue to support our Integrative Wellness Program for our staff members to keep them whole and healthy. And so far over the last 2 and a half years, we've had 50 participants with that program. And beginning tomorrow night, I'm thrilled because we have our One Life Parent Interactive Workshop. I sent out the message one evening, and by the time I woke up in the morning, we had like 40 parents. I had to close the, the, um, the survey because we were only supposed to go up to 20. And so there's definitely a peak interest in our community. And, uh, the first class will be— the first sessions will be offered in English, and then we'll move on to our Spanish sections throughout the year."},{"start":1285012,"end":1327718,"speaker":"C","text":"All right, so, um, our district have partnered with College of San Mateo nursing program for several years, and we just started a new partnership with Unitech Nursing School. And so the nurse— their nurses come in and do a clinical training on with our nurses, and most student nurses get their clinical trainings in hospitals or in clinic setting. And so they're being exposed to a new specialty in school nursing. And already we're seeing fruits of our labor with Unitec, where several of their graduates have applied to be substitute nurses in our district."},{"start":1327718,"end":1371716,"speaker":"J","text":"So goals and next steps for our department is just to make sure that we are in compliance, that everybody receives school-wide wellness, that we're reducing health-related barriers, and that we're strengthening our partnerships with the community, and that we continue to use data to drive the work that we do. And lastly, I'd just like to thank all of our partners that help contribute to our department. So if you have any questions for myself, and then also feel free to ask my student advisors— they're used to be— they're used to being called out on the spot. Feel free to ask us questions."},{"start":1371716,"end":1373166,"speaker":"S","text":"Fantastic."},{"start":1373215,"end":1385989,"speaker":"A","text":"Thank you so much. And it's wonderful to have students incorporated into the presentations. Fellow trustees, questions for Petrina?"},{"start":1385989,"end":1419803,"speaker":"N","text":"Thank you guys, and thank you students. Um, yeah, definitely, um, one of the committees I enjoy being on because we do hear the student voice at the policy or at the committee meetings. Um, just wanted to also say thank you for adding the policy pieces that tie to each of the, the parts. That's always nice to see some tie-in there. I did have one question. Um, I I thought I heard somebody— I can't remember who— for the Vector mandated training, there's going to be a live training available. Is that just for staff, or— I know there's parents, volunteers interested."},{"start":1419803,"end":1427276,"speaker":"C","text":"No, it's with staff upon request, and Apollo will lead that. Okay, thank you so much, Steph."},{"start":1429741,"end":1454366,"speaker":"G","text":"Thank you for the presentation. Just one question, or more for clarification. When you guys were talking about the glasses and like the follow-up with parents that either they did or not— they didn't answer the phone, or some of the students' glasses were broken— are we doing something about it? Because I know you mentioned perhaps some of the parents may not have insurance."},{"start":1454366,"end":1494448,"speaker":"C","text":"So for students who receive glasses from Vision to Learn, if glasses are lost or broken They replace it within 1 year, 1 time. For other students, if they don't have insurance, we typically reach out to Menlo Park Lions Club, and they are always happy and willing to assist us. And this year we haven't used it as yet, but we just, um, have that, the resource for students who are in McKinney-Vento. And we haven't used it yet, but it's good to have that option as well."},{"start":1494448,"end":1496962,"speaker":"G","text":"Great, thank you."},{"start":1496962,"end":1518498,"speaker":"A","text":"Can I just piggyback on, uh, Trustee Márquez's question? Are we aware of students that need glasses that don't have them? And of course, for all the partners, it takes so many to be able to get this, get this kind of work done."},{"start":1604383,"end":1604705,"speaker":"A","text":"Thank you."},{"start":1605716,"end":1623194,"speaker":"L","text":"It's great to see all the collaboration and the help, and then the follow-through, and then the repeat follow-through for the— particularly for the vision screening, which you were talking about tonight. So this is great. I'm really glad that we're able to do this for our students. It's clear that there's a need. And so, you know, thank you for the work that you're doing."},{"start":1623194,"end":1686414,"speaker":"M","text":"Same as many others, really do appreciate all the work, especially from our Student committee members, but also just— it's— I think it's always helpful to have an overview of all the different work that the Health and Wellness Department is doing. It sounds like we're doing quite a bit. Dental care, vision, hearing, general behavior— quite a bit. So I think it's just really— I think often those get lost in kind of the whole school ecosystem, but also super important, you know, obviously key to Getting the education piece is like having the fundamentals there. So great to hear that. The question— I had 2-ish questions. It's more about the Safe Routes to School e-bike survey and kind of the results that came out there. More just out of curiosity, and I might have missed it, but so the numbers that are there, was this just a survey of students on whether or not they own or ride these vehicles, or what are the numbers exactly?"},{"start":1686414,"end":1734660,"speaker":"J","text":"So Safe Routes to School actually came to the school sites those particular school sites that are named, and they went to the bike racks to do the count. So these were actual, um, bikes and scooters, e-motos. They actually took pictures. I didn't include that, but you see the illegal things that they're not supposed to be driving and the bike racks. And this year we've also gotten complaints from parents because some of these e-motos and e-bikes are so large that students that ride regular bikes are not able to even fit their bikes in there anymore. And so we're going to have them come back and do another survey at all the school sites just to see if there's a big difference, because that's the first time we ever did something like that."},{"start":1734660,"end":1737705,"speaker":"M","text":"Got it. So this is not a student survey, this is a point-in-time audit."},{"start":1737705,"end":1738185,"speaker":"A","text":"Yeah."},{"start":1738185,"end":1740461,"speaker":"M","text":"Of school grounds on what is actually there."},{"start":1740461,"end":1740958,"speaker":"J","text":"Correct."},{"start":1740958,"end":1756869,"speaker":"M","text":"Got it. And so I think what I— what I think I'm reading here is Some e-bikes— there's only one, so it's not— some e-bikes are maybe not, not great depending on how fast they go. E-motos, no good. E-scooters, no good. Scooters, okay."},{"start":1756869,"end":1779824,"speaker":"J","text":"Is that the old school scooter that you like, like you can like push and go? Yes, if that's what scooter means. But the, the e-scooters that are electrical, technically you're supposed to be 16 years old and up in order to be riding those, and We know that oftentimes we see a number of students, even little ones, on those, and they're not supposed to be."},{"start":1779824,"end":1816628,"speaker":"M","text":"Got it. Okay, so this is really interesting to see. I'm good to see the numbers. There's more than probably our ideal, um, on, on the please don't do this side. Uh, is— so is the— what is the approach that we are taking? Is it more education-focused on letting the students and families know, hey, by the way, this is— really shouldn't be doing that? Or is it coordination with other authorities? Or how are we thinking? Because I think you mentioned— I know this is, um, an issue that others have also raised in the community. We, we definitely want to make sure that our students are safe."},{"start":1816676,"end":1817494,"speaker":"A","text":"So curious."},{"start":1817494,"end":1857691,"speaker":"J","text":"So one thing, when they did the audit last year, the, the full reports were sent to the school sites and a one-pager was was sent out to the principals for them to communicate that information of, you know, what should— what students should and should not be writing. The Parent Venture has also done a parent education series on this whole topic. And so one is just educating parents, especially that the holiday seasons are coming up, and that's the hot item, you know, to get the student. And I don't know if you've purchased one for someone in your life because you're, you're smiling, so I don't know."},{"start":1857691,"end":1858877,"speaker":"M","text":"I would never."},{"start":1858877,"end":1897474,"speaker":"J","text":"But just, you know, just, just make sure that they're safe and that they meet the age requirements. And a lot of these stores out here, they're pushing things out that there are just regular e-bikes, but they're actually e-motos. And so they're not the product that— they're not the product that they're claiming them to be. And so I think eventually we need to probably look at board policy around this topic, um, because it's, it's just becoming a hot topic and It is embedded in some of our board policies, but we may need to have a policy specific to that item."},{"start":1897474,"end":1919661,"speaker":"M","text":"Yeah, that's really interesting. I, I've heard that before too. I'm— we don't need to discuss it. I, I am curious though, because I think what I heard is that many of these items are already illegal. So I, I'm not sure what the value add is for a board policy to kind of— other than like, hey, we need to make this clear. don't, don't do illegal stuff."},{"start":1919661,"end":1952145,"speaker":"J","text":"Don't bring them to our campus because they're illegal. So if whatever you choose to do at home, that's one thing, but you shouldn't be riding them to school. And we're trying to get the message out to parents that, hey, this is unsafe for your kids. And, you know, um, with San Mateo County Office of Ed, they're offering education, so hopefully parents will take the opportunity between that and, um, the Parent Venture to learn a little bit more about it instead of just thinking it's a toy."},{"start":1952145,"end":1957446,"speaker":"M","text":"Yeah, okay. No, that's super good to know that this is happening. Thank you. That's all I had."},{"start":1957446,"end":2018067,"speaker":"T","text":"I would like to add to your comment. The police department is also heavily involved in this because this is a very serious issue. It's a safety issue. Um, and one way in which, like, board policy could help with this is Giving us kind of, uh, like an official leg to stand on when we come and meet with the parent about one of these illegal bikes, right? Um, I think what ends up happening is, you know, we'll, we'll meet with the family, staff meets with family administration, and as you can imagine, there's pushback, right? Um, and there isn't this common understanding that we have on the legality of this, or lack thereof. That is not in alignment with some of our families. And so a lot of it is, as you mentioned, is around disseminating information and making sure that everyone's on the same page. But I think policy, the way it comes in in this situation, is just giving us some formal language, right, to lean on."},{"start":2018772,"end":2018852,"speaker":"F","text":"Yeah."},{"start":2018852,"end":2052980,"speaker":"A","text":"It's wonderful when kids can get themselves to school, but maybe not at 60 miles an hour. Timeliness is important, but not that. Okay, um, thank you so much for the presentation. Uh, was really sad to hear about the hospitalization rates. Um, this sort of implies some trend lines happening there, um, and that maybe more supports are needed there. So just if, if that's something that is happening that we need to address, let's, let's try and get ahead of that. Um, not sure if there's a comment on that."},{"start":2052980,"end":2091052,"speaker":"J","text":"Yeah, um, as I mentioned, some of our middle school teams are attending an upcoming training with San Mateo County Office of Ed to address this. This is happening from 4th grade to 8th grade, and so it's not just our middle schoolers. We're getting some of our younger kids involved, and that number was based on a couple of weeks ago, and so that number could have increased, you know, at this time, unfortunately. So we need to do whatever we can as a district to provide prevention support for students, but also interventions once we find out that Something like this has occurred."},{"start":2091052,"end":2104843,"speaker":"A","text":"That's right. So before it was the HSI program, the Healthy Start Initiative, which the schools fell under, and then there was a communities-based program. And so I think they're combining both of those together. What that looks like, I'm not sure. Are the districts going to have to apply for grants, or do the community partners have to apply to be funded through the school district. It's, it's really, uh, up in the air and not clear. Uh, we're not going to sacrifice student programming, especially around wellness. Um, so we, we will, you know, continue to look at our budget and see, um, what creative ways we can implement to ensure that we're not reducing the student support Especially around these wonderful programs that you have mentioned. But we'll definitely be kind of following up on this budget. It's, you know, waiting on that email, that communication. I was a founding staff member in 2015 when KIPP Excelencia opened, and I have been one of the principals for the last 10 years. This year is bittersweet as it's my final year as the principal of KIPP Excelencia, and next year I'll be moving to our regional office to support a portfolio of schools. I'm honored that in my last year as principal, I get to be here this evening in front of each of you and in front of the board. Tonight I'll be presenting alongside my co-principal for our middle school, Ileana Alvarez. We will walk you through our academic outcomes that qualify us for a 5-year charter renewal and make our school community a special place. Next slide, please. Thank you. Our presentation will have 3 short sections providing an overview of our school community, Our program and our results."},{"start":2351684,"end":2352226,"speaker":"S","text":"Next slide, please."},{"start":2354670,"end":2562121,"speaker":"B","text":"And one more slide. Thank you. So KIPP Excelencia serves elementary and middle school students in grades TK through 8. As I shared before, we were founded in 2015 through the advocacy and vision of our families in the North Fair Oaks community, and our school is built on a strong belief that strong relationships are at the heart of student success. Our vision is to support students academically and socially so that they can be successful and fulfilled in high school, in college, and in life. We empower them to become agents of change in their community by exemplifying our school core values— our school's core values of love, grit, gratitude, zest, and curiosity. Next slide, please. Oh, sorry, this slide's great. Um, we are very much a community school, and our student population reflects the local area grounded in North Fair Oaks. The vast majority of our students are Latinx, Almost 90% are socioeconomically disadvantaged, and well over half are English language learners, and almost 15% of our students have IEPs. In my role as principal, I'm supported by a fantastic leadership team as shown here on the slide. I want to give a special shout out to Miss Ashley Zamora, it's right over here, who will be taking over as principal of our elementary school at the end of this year. And Ileana, who is already leading our middle school community. So let me walk you through our model, which balances academic excellence with deep community connection. To enable our students to reach their potential academically, we implement research-based curriculum and offer a variety of elective classes. We are relentless in our use of data and assessments to drive academic progress monitoring and maximize our instructional time with We create a learning environment where students can thrive through predictable routines, clear expectations, and a strong belief in the abilities of all of our students. And we invest in our staff with 3 to 4 weeks of professional development each summer and a coach and frequent instructional coaching for every single teacher. And joy is just as important to us. We bring joy through this into our school community Through our after-school programming opportunities, a range of sports and clubs, and our monthly Zest Fest, which are school spirit assemblies to build communities. You can see some pictures up there. We use restorative practices and an explicit socio-emotional learning curriculum to teach students to acknowledge their feelings and give them agency in conflict resolution. And for students who are most in need, we have weekly coordination of services team meetings to join up the support of our stakeholders, including targeted mental health services on-site for our students. Another key to achieving this sense of joy and belonging is our partnership with a variety— with the wider community. And so we work with a number of organizations shown here, as well as others, to provide additional supports and opportunities for our students and families. I actually heard some overlap with some of our community partners in the previous presentation. KIPP Excelencia values our parents and our caregivers as essential partners in their children's education. We provide a variety of opportunities for families to be active participants in the school, such as, such as monthly cafecitos with the principals and our innovative neurodiversity carnival that we host each April. These events help build a strong school community and sit alongside formalized structures such as the KIPP Family Council and our parent-teacher conferences. Thank you."},{"start":2562250,"end":2562508,"speaker":"N","text":"Thank you."},{"start":2562508,"end":2641678,"speaker":"B","text":"We provide targeted supports for students that need it, including our English learners who make up over half of our school community. We deliver both integrated and designated English language development, ensuring students receive the targeted instruction scaffolds they need to engage with our rigorous academic program. As a result, well over half of KIPP Excelencia's English language learners made progress towards their English language proficiency LP in 24-25 school year above the state average. KIPP Excelencia staff of education specialists also work closely with our teachers to ensure that the needs of our 14.5% of students with IEP, individualized education plans, are met through a variety of services. In general, our overall special education philosophy is for students to spend the majority of their time in the least restrictive environment, and this approach is working beginning with our youngest and earliest years at Excelencia, with our reading growth data showing particularly really encouraging growth last year for our kindergarten and first grade students with IEPs. Over 90% of our kindergarten and first grade students with IEPs made significant growth in reading last year. And, um, now it's Ileana. I, I'm going to pass it over to, um, sorry, one second. I'm going to pass it over to Ileana Alvarez to share more about our results."},{"start":2646127,"end":2812934,"speaker":"R","text":"Um, I got an army behind me. Um, good evening, buenas noches. My name is Selena Alvarez, and I'm honored to be here this evening and walk you through Excelencia's results over our last charter term. We take our school culture very seriously at Excelencia. As you see here, chronic absenteeism has hugely improved from 61.9% in the 21-22 school year to 20.9 in 2024-2025. Suspensions have also seen a big decrease, bringing them in line with our state averages, and our student retentions keep improving every year, now over 90%. Now to focus on academics. We believe that literacy is the foundation of all learning. We have put significant work into pivoting our curriculum to CKLA and Fish aligned with the science of reading, with regular assessments, and have seen great results. In the school year '24-'25, the percentage of KIPP Excelencia students in K-4 reading at grade level grew from 35% to 61%, and for each of the 3 years thereafter, at least 2/3 of our K-4 students made at least average growth, if not higher. Our focus on literacy has shown up in our ELA data. We've seen steady growth in SBAC ELA distance from standard results over the past several years, not only for all students but also for Latinx and socially disadvantaged students— socioeconomic— socioeconomically disadvantaged students. Um, we have seen similar success in our math instruction through the launch of Eureka Squared and iReady assessments, enabling more precise and understanding of student needs and targeted support. We saw similar gains in math distance from standard across all students. Importantly, students grow while they're at KIPP Excelencia. From the first time in 2025, the California School Dashboard reported growth data that measures year-to-year improvements in students' assessment scores, showing the percentage of students improving from the previous year. We are particularly proud of our accelerated growth across 3 subgroups for both ELA and math. In summary, KIPP Excelencia is a school rooted in the community where every family belongs and where our students can thrive. We are proud of our upward trajectory and results over the last few years, and we would love to continue that progress. I'm therefore asking you to please renew our charter for a further 5 years. Thank you for your time this evening and for your ongoing partnership."},{"start":2812934,"end":2848323,"speaker":"A","text":"Thank you so much. I believe we will now take public comment. I am grateful for the support and guidance that I have received from leaders, particularly Courtney Hernandez, who has helped me grow into the teacher that I am today. That support inspired me to give back as a 2nd grade team lead and as a mentor in the KIPP teacher residency. I welcomed 2 resident teachers into my classroom for 1 year each, provided coaching each week, and watched proudly as both became homeroom teachers. I have stayed at Excelencia because of the strong relationships that we build with students and families. 2 years ago, I attended the 8th grade graduation of my very first class. One of those students wrote me a letter on her last day of school. In it, she wrote, you are more than my 2nd grade teacher. You are my role model, my supporter, my uplifter, my everything. These are the moments that make it all worth it. But even when the moments are hard, at KIPP Excelencia, we never give up on children. North Fair Oaks is too often overlooked and underfunded. Those trips have taught me— those trips have pushed me out of my comfort zone, encouraging me to try new foods and activities. KIPP Excelencia is growing. Our motto is Excelencia is Love, and our teachers have created a warm, caring environment where students belong. As a result, students feel safe, secure, and ready to As an example, last year a 5th grader joined my homeroom. He was struggling emotionally. He did not feel that he fit in. I worked to build a strong relationship with him and develop his confidence. Within months, he made friends and became excited to come to school. His mom even told me that my support has changed his life. Now I carry a bookmark that he bought me as a daily reminder of why this work matters. I even attended the Excelencia campus in early elementary. When I began working here 6 years ago, it felt like coming home. I joined Excelencia at the same time as my son, who was starting kindergarten at the time. Making that life and career change was one of the most fulfilling decisions I have ever ever made. Since then, I have watched my son thrive. He is now a 5th grader. He became an excellent reader thanks to his phenomenal early grade teachers. When we welcomed a new baby 3 years ago, he loved reading to her. To me, that is Excelencia in action— one child's education enriching an entire family. Excelencia serves hundreds of students, keeping their needs at the center of everything We do. How did tonight's meeting go?"},{"start":5055504,"end":5055714,"speaker":"N","text":"Sorry."},{"start":5056182,"end":5056344,"speaker":"M","text":"Nope."},{"start":5056441,"end":5057862,"speaker":"A","text":"Yep. No, no, no, Jennifer, go for it."},{"start":5057862,"end":5069878,"speaker":"N","text":"For the future agenda topics, do we want to revisit what's going to happen to the website in one go, or is this kind of just Slow rollout."},{"start":5070186,"end":5072709,"speaker":"A","text":"So we're still overdue for a comms update, I believe."},{"start":5072774,"end":5073098,"speaker":"J","text":"Yeah."},{"start":5073098,"end":5088456,"speaker":"T","text":"Yeah, it will be weaved into that, the comms update, which will provide a thorough kind of dive into some of the suggested input on updating the website. So we can loop that into that or weave that into the communications update."},{"start":5088456,"end":5088476,"speaker":"J","text":"Cool."},{"start":5094709,"end":5101178,"speaker":"A","text":"Alright, back to reflection. How did tonight's meeting go? Feedback? I'll start."},{"start":5101647,"end":5118724,"speaker":"G","text":"I mean, I think it went well. I mean, obviously, as always with the Wellness Committee, I, I, I think it's great that Redwood City has that, and obviously all the resources that are provided to our families. And, you know, I was glad to hear, like, obviously with my question, I was really concerned about the glasses because I'm like, well, what if they break?"},{"start":5118853,"end":5119335,"speaker":"V","text":"And then Yeah."},{"start":5119335,"end":5149771,"speaker":"G","text":"They don't replace them. So I was glad to hear that the Lions Club is able to help. So, um, that was really good. And I mean, obviously with the, uh, public hearing, it was really nice to see obviously all the supporters for KIPP Excelencia. So that was amazing. And to hear the story, the students, as always, just like, um, the students when they come in and present, I think that's actually really good for them to, um, you know, participate and like they said, make their voices heard. So I think it was good overall."},{"start":5149771,"end":5168279,"speaker":"A","text":"I loved how much student participation tonight's meeting had across so many different axes, right? Yeah, feels like almost every single one of our major topics had, had student representation. So just like, I love seeing that, and anything we could do to encourage that would be great. Other thoughts?"},{"start":5173298,"end":5182371,"speaker":"M","text":"One thing, just reflecting on big changes in today's meeting, is I really appreciate the pledge of allegiances now. I think it like brings to life the, yes, the student voice, yes, the student engagement, and like also the school pride with principals and whoever else. So that's one thing that's nice of us."},{"start":5198146,"end":5198339,"speaker":"A","text":"Thank you."},{"start":5198339,"end":5249242,"speaker":"M","text":"The other is, without like talking to the merits of, um, the public hearing, it is generally— it obviously it's a different situation with, um, coming for a renewal hearing from the district versus the district operating as a whole, but it is really nice just to see the community come together and kind of speak about the impact that they've had. And I know, I'm very confident that we are also having that impact within our students and our families lives, but I don't know that we have dedicated a time to kind of celebrate that out loud. And so I think about— I remember last year was the first year that we had, or that I, that I remember having the, the State of the District kind of presentation where a lot of things were celebrated. And so I was just thinking about, is it also an opportunity? One, I hope we do that again because I think it's really important for us to reflect on a lot of the positives."},{"start":5249242,"end":5249372,"speaker":"J","text":"Yes."},{"start":5249372,"end":5271892,"speaker":"M","text":"But yes, 2, whether or not that's like an opportunity for For getting families or encouraging families and students to kind of speak their mind about the things that have gone well for them. Because again, I think we always get a lot of the fuel. Often we, often we get families who have concerns that they want addressed, which is totally right. It just doesn't tell the whole story, I think. So it's just something on my mind."},{"start":5271892,"end":5273239,"speaker":"B","text":"Fair enough."},{"start":5274521,"end":5275451,"speaker":"A","text":"Other thoughts, reflections?"},{"start":5275451,"end":5304907,"speaker":"L","text":"Not much to add, but I will say that, yeah, thank you, Dr. R, for leaning in on that pledge because it is kind of The principals are really engaged in bringing that in, and I think that that's made a big difference about how that— about the way it feels and all of that, the engagement there. The only other thing I'd say is that the one thing I appreciated about the— really appreciate about the KIPP presentation was that the speakers kept their comments kind of like directed, concise, you know, went really well. Like they did a good job of making sure that that presentation part was there, and that was a nice touch."},{"start":5304907,"end":5305244,"speaker":"E","text":"They really did."},{"start":5308340,"end":5308501,"speaker":"G","text":"Cool."},{"start":5309017,"end":5325676,"speaker":"A","text":"Awesome.
