Just so all participants are aware, at the direction of the board, this meeting is being recorded and will be shared with the public. We generally try to post our meeting videos on YouTube about a day or two after. Happy September. Looks like tonight's meeting is probably going to be pretty lightweight with mostly just a consent calendar. We'll be expecting to hear more about communications at a future date. We'll also be reviewing attendance and the like at a meeting on the 23rd. Just as a reminder for any of our meetings, if you look at the other business/suggested items for future agenda, that will have a pair of attachments. One gives you a schedule for when we are planning to talk about what subjects, and the other is a parking lot of topics that the board has decided merit discussion but may not yet be calendared. I'll admit that today's short meeting is a bit of a miss on my own part. I should have spotted that topics were going to be a little bit light and advocated for us to maybe pull in an interesting discussion item from the parking lot. So my apologies."},{"start":134638,"end":134991,"speaker":"F","text":"Thank you."},{"start":135216,"end":185665,"speaker":"A","text":"My apologies there. The board encourages all members of the public to participate and provide comment on issues of concern regardless of whether or not they're on the agenda. If you're here in person, please fill out a speaker comment card that's at the back of the room, just underneath a bunch of those awards and the like over there. You don't have to give your legal name, but if you'd like for us to follow up with you, please consider adding contact information. If you're online with Zoom, you can just raise your hand and we'll call on you based on your Zoom name. If you're speaking on a topic on the agenda, you'll be called at the time that that item is being considered. If it's not on the agenda, we will call on you in the public comment portion near the beginning of To be fair to all speakers, comment is limited to 3 minutes unless otherwise noted. You'll see a countdown clock at the front of the podium. As a reminder, anytime a public comment is on an item not on the agenda, the board will be unable to take action or comment on the matter. And now I believe we have a student-led Pledge of Allegiance."},{"start":185665,"end":187523,"speaker":"C","text":"Woo!"},{"start":187523,"end":195002,"speaker":"A","text":"Let's come up to the front, turn the microphone on. That's wonderful. And so long, and thanks for all the fish. All right. All right. That was great. Okay. Any changes to the agenda? I do have one from staff that I'd like to propose to start us off. They'll be pulling 7.17, 7.18, and 7.19 for a minor procedural amendment. They'll be brought back at the next board meeting. Okay, other changes to the agenda that folks would like to propose?"},{"start":292196,"end":299011,"speaker":"D","text":"I'll move that we approve the agenda as amended."},{"start":299011,"end":301894,"speaker":"A","text":"Very well. All right, public comment. I'm not seeing any comment cards. Do we have any online? Public comment. I'm not seeing any of that either. Speak now or forever hold your peace. 3, 2, 1. Okay, that's it for public comment. Do we have any members of our union that would like to comment? Not seeing any. Hope the union's doing great. Hat tip to y'all. Thank you for all your work. And let's move on to consent. We got 33 items on our consent calendar this evening. As a reminder for members of the public who are potentially attending their very first school board meeting, this is where we can approve a large number of items all in one go without having to deliberate and discuss each and every item. One other thing that's in here that by definition gets glossed over is the warrant registers. This is literally all of our expenditures. I know school finance can be a lot to wrap our heads around, but literally every single penny spent by the district is publicly accounted for in a matter of public record. It's all there. Pretty cool. All right. With that prefix, would somebody like to move that we approve the consent calendar here with 17, 18, and 19 pulled."},{"start":375653,"end":378306,"speaker":"C","text":"I'll move to approve the consent items."},{"start":378306,"end":379872,"speaker":"F","text":"I'll second."},{"start":379872,"end":396440,"speaker":"A","text":"All those in favor? Aye. Passes unanimously. Wonderful. Look at us trucking along. Okay, action items. These are items where the board must take specific action and vote on each item. We have one of those tonight, which is an approval of a substitute classified management position. Wendy, you have the con."},{"start":396440,"end":429695,"speaker":"G","text":"Thank you so much. Um, well, we are bringing this to you tonight. Typically, we wouldn't normally bring a substitute position to the board because that's something we do in our common practices. But what we are interested in doing is moving another employee into a management position temporarily. So that would come with all rights, provisions, salary, and so forth, as if it's a short-term position that has a start date and an end date. And that is why we're bringing that to the board tonight."},{"start":429695,"end":431157,"speaker":"E","text":"Lovely."},{"start":431546,"end":433679,"speaker":"G","text":"Any questions about this particular position?"},{"start":438442,"end":438811,"speaker":"A","text":"Seeing none."},{"start":438811,"end":447037,"speaker":"D","text":"Yeah, it makes sense to me, and a great reason for it too. So I will make a motion to pass the action item."},{"start":447037,"end":447439,"speaker":"C","text":"Second."},{"start":447439,"end":448550,"speaker":"A","text":"All those in favor?"},{"start":448809,"end":448922,"speaker":"B","text":"Aye."},{"start":449876,"end":459157,"speaker":"A","text":"So approved. We are all done with our action items, and we are on to board and superintendent reports. Goodness me. Does anyone have anything to report?"},{"start":462656,"end":462834,"speaker":"G","text":"Taft."},{"start":462834,"end":474537,"speaker":"F","text":"Yep, last Friday, along with President Weekly and Superintendent Rubalcaba, uh, Baz, we got to visit Taft. Um, got a great conversation with principal, with David, the 3rd David of the group."},{"start":474537,"end":477179,"speaker":"A","text":"David, David, and David. And we had our photo taken by David."},{"start":477179,"end":517627,"speaker":"F","text":"That's right. Yes, this real true story, fun time. Um, but it's great. Uh, got to hear about the different Things that are happening, the progress that's been, that's been made in the past, and how this year's starting off. Seems like there's a lot of good stuff, including some of the work that happened through the pilot program that we talked about in the past on just the professional development. It seems like there's a lot of good work that's been happening there, which is really, really great to hear, and hopefully it's something that can also be scaled across the rest of the district. But lots of positives there. Also got to see several classrooms because of time constraints, mostly focused on the lower grades. But Lots of learning seemed to be happening. Lots of excitement. Typical classroom stuff, but it was a good visit."},{"start":519650,"end":636619,"speaker":"A","text":"Yeah, amen to that. So I was obviously also there at Taft, and it was great. Principal Camarena is just like fantastically full of energy. Been wonderful to see the needle moving on a number of things. The math in particular saw a big swing up. And so we had run Taft kind of a little bit like an experiment to see what happens if we apply a little bit more intensive extra time, extra effort for extra Extra money. That those funds were not applied this year, which is something I hadn't fully internalized. But it turns out that the teachers were able to take that additional training and roll them forward fully efficaciously this school year. So it sort of seems like we did an experiment with Taft and it worked out pretty well. And that new program is now trucking along. And so maybe we should consider taking elements of this program and rinse repeating them in some of the other school sites. So I was pretty pleased by what I saw. One other random thing was that they had Thank you. We have 5 very dead trees at the entrance that are apparently owned by the city. A ticket had been opened against the city asking, hey, pretty please, you got some dead trees here, can we do something about it? And that ticket had languished. Seems like an appropriate thing for us to nudge the city about. And just like, I think it's a good reminder that we do have this 2 by 2 by 2 form factor for us to communicate things to the city. And just, I would love for us to elevate some of the reporting on that just so that we can go and kind of give direction Into the 2x2x2, they can go and interface with the city, and they can then bring back the findings and the outputs of that. This is like, it's a relatively small matter. I guess you could say like asterisk, there's a safety issue that dead trees can fall. That said, just to be clear, this is not like a heritage oak that's 100 feet tall. These are like young trees that sadly did not have a long life and become heritage trees. But just anyhow, I think it was a good process reminder for me that like 2x2x2 is probably something that we should be using. But it was a wonderful visit."},{"start":636619,"end":636795,"speaker":"E","text":"Thank you."},{"start":639053,"end":640713,"speaker":"A","text":"Superintendent also gets to report out."},{"start":642933,"end":725190,"speaker":"H","text":"You've been doing a lot. Yeah, it's, it's been a busy couple of weeks. Uh, this week, um, uh, yesterday I was at MIT, um, and had a wonderful opportunity to spend time with families, stakeholders. I got to walk classrooms. Um, Principal Nick has done a really wonderful job in You know, building culture, boosting climate, and getting systems in place for our kiddos at MIT. So it's been wonderful as we're walking classrooms, seeing a lot of engagement, teachers diving into the curriculum, putting into practice a lot of the best instructional practices that we've been learning about through the years with the support of Ed Services. And then in the afternoon, had the session with staff, and that was also powerful. Was able to You know, get into conversations regarding, you know, the year ahead with professional development, with, you know, plans to continue to support the site and support Principal Nick as he continues this journey of, you know, meeting all the stakeholders at MIT. So that was really, really wonderful. Next week, I will— I'll continue my listening and learning tour. I'll be at Orion on Wednesday and Garfield on Friday. So I'm very much looking forward to those 2—"},{"start":725190,"end":725656,"speaker":"F","text":"Thank you."},{"start":726763,"end":758217,"speaker":"H","text":"Uh, site visits. Um, and as always, you know, I do my input sessions, and then in between I do classroom walkthroughs, which is really the, the best part of it all, is to just see the kiddos in action and learning. So really, really wonderful times. And again, the Listening and Learning Tour has been an incredible opportunity, uh, to see all the great strengths that, uh, you have all worked on through the years, um, with staff and families and just locking forces for, for the For the best possible opportunities for our kiddos. So it's incredible, and I'll keep reporting out on, on the tour as I continue."},{"start":758217,"end":816211,"speaker":"A","text":"Fantastic, thank you so much. One of the things I did want to point out for folks is sitting behind me is our trusty library, uh, something that I had petitioned the, the district to put together for some number of years is now here. And I've taken the time to populate it with a number of my different books on a variety of different subjects from School board administration to pedagogy and academic interventions, uh, includes the visual display of quantitative information for graphics and the like. All of these are fair game. You want to go and just like grab one, read it, and that's not just for the trustees too. So if staff are interested in any of the books, feel free. It's a lending library. Just go in and grab them, go read through. My only hope is just you could share something about what you learned from grabbing the book and feel free to populate it with your own books as well, right? So it's just meant as a casual resource for the whole board and for Staff and cabinet to collectively uplevel ourselves. Anyhow, just wanted to make sure people are aware of that."},{"start":817427,"end":817622,"speaker":"B","text":"Sweet."},{"start":817735,"end":822525,"speaker":"A","text":"Moving on now to correspondence. Have— has anyone received correspondence of note?"},{"start":825438,"end":825535,"speaker":"C","text":"Nope."},{"start":827396,"end":834591,"speaker":"A","text":"Okay. Do we have other business or suggested items for future agenda beyond what is on the parking lot already?"},{"start":834591,"end":834611,"speaker":"F","text":"No."},{"start":840068,"end":848786,"speaker":"A","text":"Nope. Okay. Gosh, here we are at reflection. It's 7:14 and 12 seconds. How did the meeting go?"},{"start":848786,"end":850629,"speaker":"D","text":"It was efficient."},{"start":850725,"end":852408,"speaker":"A","text":"It's great to hear about school visits again, though."},{"start":852632,"end":868527,"speaker":"D","text":"I'm looking forward to, yeah, tomorrow doing them and going around. So it's awesome to hear about people back on campus and getting a chance to see it all in action. I mean, so early in the year, it's only a few weeks in, so I really appreciate the administrators taking their time out of the day to To host the trustees to be able to come around."},{"start":869479,"end":869575,"speaker":"B","text":"Yeah."},{"start":871576,"end":872447,"speaker":"A","text":"Other reflections?"},{"start":872447,"end":889678,"speaker":"F","text":"I guess not so much on the meeting, but similar to that, actually just wanted to say it's really— it was nice to go as multiple trustees to the same site and with the superintendent for the same reason of just like, let's reduce the administrative burden. But also it's just great to hear different perspectives and thoughts. So very excited about how this year is unfolding so far."},{"start":892170,"end":912950,"speaker":"A","text":"Other reflections? My main one I gave up top, which was like, this was so short, which on the one hand is fun because we all get to go home to our families early and don't have to have a huge chunk taken out of our night. But we also only have so many meetings during the year. And so like, I feel like there's a little bit of a lost opportunity to go and like discuss and deliberate topics. And as you know, we can't talk about things that aren't on the agenda."},{"start":912950,"end":919110,"speaker":"D","text":"It is true. But I mean, at least we did have about 30 policies to read, so it wasn't— the prep work wasn't lost."},{"start":919110,"end":934390,"speaker":"A","text":"Prep work was not lost. Amen to that. And thanks to— thank you, staff, by the way, for all the work that you put into preparing and executing on the agenda, because consent is fast in the meeting, but that doesn't mean it was super fast and easy to put that together and get that across the finish line."},{"start":934390,"end":977061,"speaker":"C","text":"Yeah, so I was going to say the same thing when you started to say about the meeting, you know, being short. Sometimes we have really long meetings, so I appreciate it. Although we did have a long weekend, and I do want to say, obviously, we all work and had a long weekend and still had to read the agenda. And so Going back to the board policies, I had one question, and I was reading the answer. And so I appreciate the staff because I didn't ask my question until yesterday. So I do want to thank all of you. And of course, again, thanks to our lovely Board Policy Committee for all the work that you guys put in with Wendy. And obviously, oh my God, Jolene. Yes, for all the work that she does. So Thank you."},{"start":978085,"end":978199,"speaker":"B","text":"Yep."},{"start":978199,"end":990695,"speaker":"A","text":"Somebody should make a song about Jolene. Sorry, I had to. Okay, great. And do you have any reflections about the meeting?"},{"start":990695,"end":1003666,"speaker":"H","text":"No, I think it all went pretty well. I also think that short meetings, there's nothing wrong with that. And if we were here just for the Clifford kiddos, that was also a beautiful thing."},{"start":1003780,"end":1009312,"speaker":"A","text":"So I'll say Thanks so much to the Clifford kids and their families for making that happen."},{"start":1009312,"end":1016117,"speaker":"C","text":"And I actually do want to say, I was, I was gonna say maybe Clifford needs to get some sort of like award because they're always here."},{"start":1016630,"end":1017449,"speaker":"A","text":"No, my God."},{"start":1017690,"end":1025907,"speaker":"C","text":"I mean, all the other schools are represented as well, but Clifford is like beyond, like they're always here. I mean, that was wonderful. The teachers were here just for their students, right?"},{"start":1026420,"end":1027223,"speaker":"A","text":"It's very sweet."},{"start":1027303,"end":1032902,"speaker":"C","text":"I mean, it says a lot about a school. So again, everyone else does the same. It's just Clifford. They're the ones with the biggest crowd."},{"start":1032950,"end":1035499,"speaker":"A","text":"So the energy is palpable for sure."},{"start":1035964,"end":1036156,"speaker":"E","text":"Yeah."},{"start":1036156,"end":1075714,"speaker":"A","text":"Awesome. We're on to calendar. So really on this, just a quick reminder about the study session that we have on the 30th at 6 PM, not 7 PM, right here on formative assessment data, PLCs, and multitudes. But like, we contain multitudes. I'm glad to see that we're doing study sessions. They're a great tool for us to have in our arsenal as a school board that we ought to be using more regularly. So it's like, it's really neat to see the first event. those kind of queued up. Uh, other calendar things, comments? No? Okey-doke. I think we're on to adjournment at 7:18 PM. Would someone like to move we adjourn?"}]}
