We generally try to post our meeting videos on YouTube about a day or two after. So, with pumpkin spice lattes now being vended again, it's time at this meeting for a little Thanksgiving. Oh, a little early. Well, we'll be giving thanks to our amazing parent leaders and our volunteers. Volunteers who worked so hard on Measure C. School board partners will also be recognizing Trustee Li— no, please don't call him David— for his leadership. We have a public hearing on the sufficiency of our instructional materials, consents, and some resolutions. A good night of material, but I don't think we'll be breaking midnight on tonight's agenda. So here we go. The board encourages all members of the public to participate and provide comment on issues of concern, regardless of whether or not they're on the agenda. I submitted a question about regarding also the construction In Orion school site regarding the solar and the playground. If there's possibility to give us some information as to who's responsible and who's accountable for the project progression and impact to the school. As you know, our campus is unusual in that we don't have a flat surface, so having an area that's occupied by construction site It's taken an impact on the students as well as to the staff and the community. So any information would be greatly appreciated, especially since our school site is one that has constantly festivals. And in less than a month, or actually in a month, we're going to have the Mid-Autumn Festival, which I hope you guys come and join this. But having a construction site will really impact us throughout the year. So I just wanted to see if in the coming weeks we could get some guidance as to that, since it's been delay after delay. Thank you."},{"start":598663,"end":636363,"speaker":"A","text":"Thank you so much, and we'll have staff follow up with you on that. Okay, great. All right. I don't think our teacher union has made comments, so Not seeing that, we will move on to community recognition. So now up is our— to thank our parent leaders and volunteers who worked hard on Measure C. For those who aren't familiar, this was a measure on the June 2nd primary ballot that would have raised extra funds we could have used to pay teachers via parcel tax. I have some things to say on this, but first I'll yield the floor to my fellow trustees as well as the superintendent if there's some comment that folks would like to make."},{"start":636363,"end":734016,"speaker":"C","text":"I mean, I definitely want to extend just some really just deep gratitude to every parent, staff member, all our neighbors that, you know, they dedicated their time and energy to the Measure C campaign. You know, I know we didn't cross the final threshold, but we got solid support from over 15,000 voters, and that's just a powerful testament to how much the city values public education. And what really struck me the most throughout the process was just how this effort strengthened our community relations. And it went well beyond what our, our just our immediate school district families. Uh, it brought together local businesses, neighborhood associations, and civic leaders. And thank you, Jessica, for being really the spearhead for kind of rallying up through and connecting with all those groups. And I just, I look forward to continuing that investment in our community, um, and those partnerships and capitalizing on what this committee's incredible groundwork did, um, and taking that forward outside of a context of a I just think that channeling that kind of civic energy into a shared mission of supporting every student is going to be really valuable. So thank you, everyone that was part of the committee, part of the dedicated core, and anybody that was out there knocking on doors, you know, texting their friends and raising funds for Measure C. You know, we'll probably do it again. And, you know, It'll be good to know, to see the bar that you've set. I think that the next committee will, you know, will have a good example to follow. So thank you so much."},{"start":734016,"end":799676,"speaker":"K","text":"Yep, for sure. And then a very high bar that was set. It was awe-inspiring to see the amount and the incredible dedication from so many community members. And, you know, we represent 12 different schools and so many different constituents, and I'm sure that there are different priorities based on all the different programs and things. It was really incredible to see so many people come together as a single movement. And again, we— I don't want to single people out, but Jesse, obviously you did a great job in bringing everyone together, and I'm so grateful to see everyone be able to do that to make sure that all of our kids have the resources they deserve. And I was telling Mike, it is a little bittersweet to see so many folks and familiar faces today, but ultimately I think it's really reenergizing because I know change And impact doesn't always move at the pace that we want it to. But I think persistence and conviction ultimately do get us to where we need. So thank you all for being a huge part of that journey. And I, again, I do also hope that you'll continue supporting us moving forward as we keep on fighting the good fight."},{"start":799676,"end":830268,"speaker":"F","text":"I don't want to be super redundant, but of course, thank you so much to everyone that contributed. Again, Jessica, from day one, you were in here at The meetings, making sure that you were going to get all these people right behind you, and that's just exactly what happened. So I really do appreciate from the bottom of my heart. We are all very grateful for everything that you guys did for this district, and I think this just is going to make us stronger. So thank you so much."},{"start":830268,"end":894898,"speaker":"A","text":"Oh man, this is a tough one. I obviously wish we were popping champagne tonight to celebrate the increased funding for teacher salaries. We came so Close to getting there, less than 2%. The vast majority of voters, very nearly 2, you know, very nearly 2/3 of our community supported this effort. It's wonderful to see all the Measure C signs up, even on the side of Steve's bike bus, uh, to see, hear the stories about people door knocking, to chat with voters about what this would mean for schools and classrooms. And sometimes it takes time to see a result. The folks who met with each and every one of you and your volunteers to hear and understand your viewpoint, that can leave a lasting impression. Carlo, Jessica, Steve, Dave, Ben, Carson, all of you, thank you for all you do for this community in so many ways. Carlo, I literally wouldn't have run for this position in the first place if it wasn't for your urging. True story. You are always working behind the scenes with data and diligence, never one to take the spotlight, which is why I'm calling you out right now. Jessica, you're a force of nature and the face of the community to so many in the district and to so many of our partners. So we want to formally thank you all as a district for all of the hard work that you put in here. I didn't know your voice sounded like that. You sound like you deserve every bit of a radio somewhere, someplace. It's amazing. Superintendent. Board members, and the entire Redwood community, I just want to take the time to say we're so excited to be here. My name is Ethan Ashley. I have the pleasure of serving as the CEO of an organization called School Board Partners. We have the pleasure of partnering with and being in support of and developing elected school board members around the country to lead with courage, competence, and impact. And we do so around the country. We're in 40-plus states, 200-plus districts, impacting about 9 million kids. And, uh, what that really means is that we done seen some school boards. We done seen some school board members. And what I'll tell you is we sort of know what exceptional school board leadership looks like. And one thing I want to make clear here is that that leadership isn't always loud. That leadership isn't always On the news, making headlines. But what I do know is that that leadership looks like someone who asks tough questions, says the thing that needs to be said, and understands that governance is about the, the kids. That's what we're doing it for. Many of you all know David Li's journey to this seat in particular was extraordinary. 15 people stood up and said, I want to sit in that seat. After you all as a board did your due diligence, 8 folks rose to the top. And what we know to be true is this board chose David. This board chose Trustee Li. And of course, they probably saw, you know, an attorney, a great consultant, leadership development, and all the things. He is, he is impressive. There's no doubt about it. But what I know to be true is you all probably heard what I heard, which, you know, I want to make sure I say this right because we went back, we reviewed the tapes. Let me acknowledge it. So one of the things he said that really touched me was public schools can and should be used as a tool To achieve greater societal equity. And the thing about that is that David's statement isn't just a statement, it's a charge. Because we know school board members, they have an extraordinary responsibility. They decide how resources allocated. They decide what priorities get prioritized. You all hire and hold the leader accountable. It just means that we may have already reviewed it or it's unobjectionable, and we'd like to focus our limited time together on substantive matters requiring presentation and discourse. I've been engaging on, as you all know, my 90-day entry plan, and part of that was this very thoughtful listening and learning tour that I have embarked on. This week on Tuesday, I spent a greater part of my day engaging with stakeholders, parents in the morning, and then staff in the afternoon at Adelante Selby. I had a wonderful time, you know, sharing my leadership story, sharing, you know, our common vision and the work that we've been doing since July. And really, the point of this was to Listen and engage in, you know, small group empathy listening sessions with all of those who attended. And we had such a great gathering on Tuesday. So it was really wonderful to see the kiddos come in and, and do their Pledge of Allegiance. It was the darnest thing ever. And then today, actually, I also spent the greater part of the day at Clifford. In the morning, had a Really great, uh, showing of parents, uh, in the morning and really just spent a lot of time delving into, uh, all the assets that they shared about the wonderful community of Clifford. Um, and then in the afternoon, um, was able to spend some time with the staff, uh, who also packed the room. And, and again, these opportunities have been affording me an opportunity to, uh, really build relationships of trust and, and, and really get to know like what Is the spirit and, and, you know, uh, the essence of each of these school communities. Um, I am collecting data because I do believe data is important, and so I am, uh, ending and concluding each of these sessions with an input gathering, uh, QR code, um, that allows me to kind of collect some of the inputs around assets and needs. Um, and, um, next week I'll be spending some time at Henry Ford, as well as Kennedy with the Cougars on Wednesday. So essentially 2 sites per week. And as I wrap up my listening and learning tour, I'll definitely report back and share all my findings and all the great things that I have been learning. But it's been really great to engage with families, you know, directly and, you know, sit next to them over a cup of coffee and just kind of delve into all the things that they've accomplished as a community, all the goals and dreams that they have. Um, and we also have, um, I know Jorge, our Director of Communications, is, uh, also, um, planning, uh, an input session, uh, via a survey for our students. I also have a huge interest in learning what our students have to say. Um, and so I'll also be sharing a lot of those, uh, data trends that come, that emerge as part of the survey. But it's been really wonderful, uh, these First few weeks as we've opened up the school here. And these listening and learning tours have been just incredible. So I look forward to continuing to update the board and the public on how these are, you know, going. So it's, it's great. So you can look out for an email from principal. Also, we sent out communications district-wide, so you can stay tuned for your school's date. And I will be there and look forward to seeing as many folks as possible."},{"start":2156963,"end":2157107,"speaker":"H","text":"Thank you."},{"start":2160487,"end":2233524,"speaker":"A","text":"And we are now on to correspondence. Notable correspondence? I had 2 ones that I feel like I should bring up. Yeah, one is, as was mentioned in public comment at the beginning of this meeting, Dave Freibush pointed out that the district may be eligible for solar tax credits. I had a very thoughtful, lengthy response prepared in my drafts and just didn't hit send. So, Dave, I'm sorry. Thank you for the extra prod and showing up this morning. We're gonna have staff follow up with you. I get back to you on that. Second one was just correspondence about the Orion campus and the emerging situation there. I think you all have been seeing the attendance numbers. They're looking very positive in many ways for Orion, but like that campus is kind of out of space, and it's pretty clear that we're gonna need a plan for the '27-'28 school year, probably a final version of which would— which will need to be in front of the board by the end of the year. So discussions with Wendy indicate staff probably also feel the squeeze. So we'll Probably need a timely solution anyhow. We should get that agendized and properly presented by staff to go and discuss what our plan is to have a plan for the 27-28 school year so that we don't run out of space on that campus. So staff are going to be running with that, and the community should expect updates on that subject."},{"start":2233925,"end":2235435,"speaker":"H","text":"Great. Cool."},{"start":2236094,"end":2237090,"speaker":"A","text":"Other correspondence of note?"},{"start":2237090,"end":2238182,"speaker":"H","text":"Nope."},{"start":2238182,"end":2293452,"speaker":"A","text":"Okay, moving on to other business/suggested items for future agenda. As a quick note, the packet now attaches both the 26-27 schedule of agenda items and the parking lot is there. Just what we said would happen last meeting. So thank you, staff. Thank you, everybody. So this just is a refresher. This is our calendar mapping out what are we going to talk about when. And then also our list of stuff that we've agreed as a board is really important to talk about, but we don't yet have on the calendar. And the informal commitment here is that about once a quarter we go through that parking lot and we go and pull a couple items from that parking lot. To actually slot them to specific dates where we're gonna go and talk about specific things. So with that said, are there other things that people would like to add to that parking lot that they wanna mention at today— tonight's meeting? Trustee Lee."},{"start":2293452,"end":2315465,"speaker":"K","text":"I think this is obviously not a priority because we've set our priorities for the year. One thing to add to the list, I think, eventually is For us to better understand how technology use, how we think about that within the district. I think there's a lot of conversations happening kind of across the state, across the country. I think we can be really thoughtful about it and not be reactive, but something to definitely keep our eyes on."},{"start":2315465,"end":2328187,"speaker":"A","text":"Yeah, I think that makes sense. There certainly are some conversations about AI happening in Silicon Valley and beyond. Awesome. Thank you. Other things people want to make sure are added to the parking lot?"},{"start":2329147,"end":2329524,"speaker":"L","text":"Nope."},{"start":2329524,"end":2330506,"speaker":"H","text":"Okay."},{"start":2330588,"end":2333618,"speaker":"A","text":"With that, we'll move on to reflection. How did tonight's meeting go?"},{"start":2333618,"end":2344759,"speaker":"F","text":"It went well. I really appreciated seeing the Alebrijes saying the Pledge of Allegiance in Spanish. That was the first time I've ever heard it in Spanish."},{"start":2345600,"end":2345874,"speaker":"M","text":"So—"},{"start":2345874,"end":2346780,"speaker":"A","text":"Me too."},{"start":2346780,"end":2358197,"speaker":"F","text":"Yeah. And so, and then as far as the meeting goes, I mean, obviously, although there's a lot of items under consent, everything was pretty clear. All of our questions were answered by cabinet. So thank you so much."},{"start":2359648,"end":2362697,"speaker":"H","text":"That's it."},{"start":2362697,"end":2401550,"speaker":"K","text":"This felt like a very positive feeling, very celebrative meeting. It was great to see a lot of the— I think there's a lot of things just celebrating all the work of the community volunteers was great. I also loved the alebrijes, bringing that together. Like Carlo, I also don't generally like to take the spotlight, so that's a little bit awkward for me, but that's okay. I think it's also more of a reflection on just the board as a board, as well as like all the staff and the community working together toward the same stuff. So I understand it's— this seems like, or it's labeled as an individual agenda item, but really I hope it's understood that it's reflective of the entire team working together."},{"start":2401550,"end":2404320,"speaker":"H","text":"Go team!"},{"start":2404320,"end":2409860,"speaker":"C","text":"Yeah, I really appreciated my directora Patty's work to bring the students here and—"},{"start":2409860,"end":2410280,"speaker":"A","text":"That was awesome."},{"start":2410280,"end":2429932,"speaker":"C","text":"Yeah, have them do that. I don't want to set the expectation that that's what should happen every single time. You know, I don't want to intimidate other schools from just sending one student or even having them do it on Zoom. You know, any participation is good participation, but still, it was a lot of fun to see that all pulled together."},{"start":2429932,"end":2442948,"speaker":"A","text":"Yeah, a lot of fun energy in tonight's meeting, and it's 7:40, and we're like basically wrapping up. Uh, we have a schedule, uh, laid out for all of our, uh, kiddos, representatives from each of our school sites, to be coming in and, and sharing, uh, who they are. And, you know, um, it was really great to hear it directly from the kids that they're so grateful that we're allowing them to be a part of this space, right? And so I think that's super inspirational, and this is why we're here for Right, all in for kids. So you can expect every school site to be cycling in week after week, or board meeting after board meeting, with students leading the Pledge of Allegiance."},{"start":2479078,"end":2509850,"speaker":"A","text":"Awesome. It'll be really exciting to see students more regularly in here. I know at one point we had student artwork up on the wall as well, and just those kinds of things that keep— to keep us grounded. Yeah, awesome. Yeah. And then now we're on to calendar. We've got a study session added for Wednesday, September 30th at 6:00 PM. Other than that, I'm not seeing any other changes to the calendar. Okay, great. And that brings us to adjournment. Somebody like to move that we adjourn?"},{"start":2509850,"end":2512009,"speaker":"K","text":"So moved."},{"start":2512009,"end":2513326,"speaker":"H","text":"I'll second."},{"start":2513326,"end":2516108,"speaker":"A","text":"All those in favor?
